The goal is not always to make an old book look new. Each book should be evaluated individually, with consideration for its age, construction, condition, intended use, history, and significance.

Whenever appropriate, BMC seeks to preserve original materials and character while restoring stability, function, and usability. Treatment decisions should respect the book that has survived rather than erase the evidence of its life.

The desired outcome may differ from one project to another. Some books need practical stabilization for continued use. Others may call for more extensive repair, restoration, rebinding, or a protective enclosure. The treatment approach should be discussed and agreed upon before work begins.

1843 German Essays - Full Rebind

Condition

Worn and damaged binding with deteriorated spine, loose pages, worn page edges.

Treatment

Client wanted a full rebind to match her hardcovers of the same series. Bob commissioned a period paper marbler to match clients originals. A careful unbinding due to the adhesives on the original paper covers. Pages will be repaired, guarded, re-sewn with new end papers and given a quarter leather tight-back binding to match the others in client's collection.

Outcome

Client is incredibly happy with the outcome. Original covers were given to client with the book, and were recreated as end papers, and sewn into text block. A book that can now be safely handled and read for many years to come!

“A Sentimental Journey” - Rebinding with Original Cover Art Preserved

Condition

Severely worn binding missing spine, detached front cover, and several loose and detached pages.

Treatment

Careful removal of remaining spine material. Majority of sewing was intact. Repaired loose pages and attached to text block. Spine was strengthened and given a hollow for the weight of the text block as it opens. Rebound in cream cloth case-binding with the original illustrated cover panel preserved and set into the new binding. Japanese tissue spine label.

Outcome

Client was very happy and surprised to see much of the original cover as part of the new binding. Structure is very strong and will be able to last a very long time of reading and perusing.

Primer Restoration

A small antique primer before treatment: worn blue paper boards and exposed, damaged spine.

After: The primer after treatment: rebound in green patterned paper with a leather spine.

Condition

This 1777 New England Primer had a damaging rebind in 1843 where they added staples through the pages. All pages were damaged from the staples and needed repair. Cover was deteriorating to the point that only the cover boards would be retained.

Treatment

Full rebind, repairing each page, re-sewn text block with end papers. Client wanted 3-piece binding with a leather spine, and green decorative paper. Each cover has tiny leather corners under the paper for added strength.

Outcome

Rebind was successful. Client was overwhelmed with being able to have the historic New England Primer in a binding they found aesthetically pleasing and was strong enough to show off to friends and associates. An historic piece to last at least another 100 years!

Tyndale - Spine Repair

Condition

A paper-bound William Tyndale volume with a ripped, partially detached spine, detached and loose pages.

Treatment

Created a spine extension for the head and tail of the spine, matching the paper type, texture, and color as closely as possible,. Added additional strengthening paper inside the spine. Repaired the loose and detached papers. Repaired breaks in the paper hinge with color-matched Japanese tissue.

Outcome

The intention of making the book usable again was a success. The client wanted as much original material kept as-is, and they are very happy with the result. They now have a perfectly functioning, long-lasting historical book back in their research library.

Reformation History - Reback with Original Spine Retained

Condition

A leather binding with marbled paper boards and a deteriorated, partially detached spine.

Treatment

A 19th century History of the Reformation book that the client wanted rebacked. The Spine was carefully removed and cleaned. The remaining leather on the boards was lifted to be able accept the new leather. New leather was color toned to match the aged historic leather. The original spine label was attached.

Outcome

The client is very happy to have their book in a condition for safe handling and many, many years of use.
